Sometimes, but not very often, you reach the limits of a van that is too „wide". Here in Mali (or was it Burkina Faso?) where I had to extend the track a little bit. Direct to my SHOP - Current Offers of VW T25 / T3 / Vanagon and Syncro Parts - Click here! |

The advantages of an up-grade from 14" to 16" or 15": - up to 4 cm more ground clearance - improved off-road performance- also on sand - lower engine speed at the same driving speed (saves your engine) The disadvantage: It is not for free. |

A remark on the prices: I only use tires of high quality brands, tires that have proved to work well. Important to me are: high maximum load, reinforced tyre flanks, drivability in the winter, high mileage etc.. Tyres which fulfil this criteria are obviously a little bit more expensive than remould tyres. I think he money that could be saved here is not worth the risk of having a couple a flat tyres in the desert, hardened tires in the winter or worn tyres after only 20.000 km. |

Changing a tyre in the desert Always fit new tyres in advance. If you are leaving with an old set of tyres, you should not be surprised about frequent flats... |

Trying to find a place to stay over night and a damaged tyre... On our way back home we were trying to find a nice place to stay for the night in an almost dried out river bed. In the meantime our tires had accumulated this great mix out of gravel and mud. The following day after about 500 km of driving it happened: a damaged tyre. The mud mix had dried rock hard (of course also sticking all over the rear swing arm) and had torn our tyre. In the future we will always clean off any mud first and keep an eye our tyres so they cannot be blocked by anything.
